Type specimen

Bitter - slab for long form

The specimen uses the official Google Fonts subset when available, otherwise a font installed on this device. If neither exists the browser falls back to a system font, so treat the official download page as authoritative.

About this font

Sol Matas' slab serif for text: brick-flat, recessed serifs carry a confident press-print calm, softened and opened for screens - directional enough for long reads, modern enough for today. Nine weights plus variable across extended Latin. Ideal for news sites, magazines, books and brands that need to feel credible and settled. As a slab serif it reads sturdy and 'solid': open counters and generous set widths give it near-sans legibility at small sizes, which is why news and information products lean on it for trust; pairing it with a Chinese hei builds a dependable editorial mood without hunting a matching serif.

Where it works best

News sites, magazines, book covers, legal/finance-style dependable brands. Body 400; 800/900 brick serifs carry real weight in headlines; avoid mixing with other slabs. For news and trusted brands: headline decks, financial/legal body copy, card-style feed; body 400, headings 700/800, and avoid stacking it with other slabs.

Licence and commercial boundaries

Licence:SIL Open Font License 1.1

The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.

SIL OFL 1.1: free for all commercial contexts, embeddable, modifiable and redistributable; no reserved-name reuse in derivatives, no standalone sales. Served via Google Fonts' official CDN.

Hard restrictions

  • Derivatives drop the name.
  • No standalone sales.

Commercial-use FAQ

Is Bitter right for serious finance/legal brands?

Very. Slab serifs carry an intrinsic printed-media credibility, and Bitter's screen-tuned counters keep it readable; pair it with a Chinese hei, or with Source Han Serif for Latin-CJK contrast, and keep generous line-height.
