Inter

The de facto UI grotesque of the last decade, started by Swedish designer Rasmus Andersson with a single mission: a typeface for computer screens. Tall x-height, open apertures, double-storey a/g keep it crisp at tiny interface sizes; nine static weights plus variable, thousands of ligatures, tabular figures for data views. Default or first-choice for Figma, GitHub and countless products, it shaped a generation of 'Inter-like' open sans aesthetics. OFL, on Google Fonts - the safe answer for interface Latin.

A common misconception is that Inter is 'screen-only'. Since version 4.0 it carries an Optical Size axis that tightens spacing below 14 pt and opens up for print; the maintainer documents every adjustment. Grab the variable file (one binary for the whole weight and optical range) rather than nine static cuts.

For compliance records, the repository README and LICENSE.txt both carry the full OFL text - archiving the repo URL plus that file is normally enough for an audit.

Best at web/app chrome, admin systems, data-heavy views (tabular figures), and English brand baselines. Picks: 400/500 body, 600/700 controls, 800/900 display tracked -2 %. Pairs cleanly with Source Han Sans, PuHuiTi and MiSans for bilingual UI; for emotive poster work, a rounded or serif face will out-character it.

The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.
