About this font
The face IBM commissioned after retiring two decades of Helvetica, then open-sourced as the whole Plex family under OFL. It explains itself in engineering language: rational, restrained, corners with mechanical joints, genuine (not slanted) italics; Sans/Serif/Mono plus Indic, Hebrew and Thai cuts carry corporate systems end to end. Developer love for Plex Mono lifted Sans into tech-brand rotation too.
IBM released the Plex design whitepaper and spacing tables with it - including rationale for micro-decisions. Plex Mono tops programmer lists, Plex Serif carries true italics, and the trio's consistency is a model for brand reuse. For finance and consulting UIs, Plex reads more distinctive than Inter at equal licence safety.
Closing the licence loop: the OFL covers the entire Plex family (one archived LICENSE spans Sans/Serif/Mono and script cuts), while IBM also sells expanded licences - standard use is untouched. SemiBold 600 is the corporate-nav sweet spot: weighty without shouting.
Where it works best
Enterprise products and clouds, finance and data UIs, engineering brands. Picks: 400 text, 500 UI, 600 heads; mix with Plex Serif for annual-report gravitas.

Licence and commercial boundaries
Licence：SIL Open Font License 1.1
The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.
