About this font

PengliWenKai is lxgw's 2025 open kai, redrawn from the author's Xuayi WenKai to conform with China's GB/Z 40637 standardised-penstroke guidance: the '隹' radical's horizontal stroke becomes vertical, certain radical shapes and stroke directions are reordered, and simplified glyphs in the General Standard are corrected stroke by stroke - a kai that both writes by hand and sets in type with orthodox strokes. It keeps the elegant, softly-chiselled look of the LXGW lineage with tall, even character frames: roughly 4,700 simplified glyphs finely proofed, plus about 11,000 traditional and inherited forms, covering everyday needs in mainland and Taiwan/HK writing. Sil OFL 1.1 - free for ads, packaging, subtitles, marks, embedded apps and the web, modifiable and redistributable under OFL with reserved names dropped. Sources and releases: lxgw/Pengli on GitHub; Maoken hosts a download page as well. Great for penmanship, textbook and poetry layouts, bookish stationery, invitations and signboards that want an orderly yet elegant kai.

Where it works best

Penmanship and teaching materials, poetry and textbook layouts, stationery, invitations, signboards, classical-flavoured packaging and titles. Simplified forms follow standardised stroke order (great for classrooms); traditional coverage is deep enough for daily TC layouts; generous whitespace suits its quiet elegance.

Licence and commercial boundaries

Licence:SIL Open Font License 1.1

The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.

SIL OFL 1.1. Free for every common commercial use (ads, packaging, film, marks, embedded apps, web). Modifications and redistribution must stay under OFL, include the licence text and use a new name (reserved names dropped).

Hard restrictions

  • Derivatives must stay OFL and drop reserved names.
  • No standalone sale of the font files.
  • ~4.7k simplified core glyphs - test very rare characters.
