About this font

Maoken YingBiKaiShu is a 2025 open-source handwriting face from the Maoken studio (maoken-fonts), modelled on hard-pen regular script: crisp starts and ends, little of the broad-nib swelling of brush kai, clean and straight lines closer to everyday notes and manuals - a kai skeleton with a human hand's warmth. Coverage centres on the GB2312 simplified set plus common punctuation, Latin and figures, making it legible and still unmistakably handwritten. Perfect for letters, cards, blackboard-style posters, packaging copy, kids' materials, journal stickers and illustrated captions. Under SIL OFL 1.1 it is free for ads, packaging, film, marks, embedded apps and the web, and may be modified and redistributed with derivatives staying under OFL and reserved names dropped. It targets simplified Chinese - not full GB18030 - so verify coverage for any full-scale job. Sources and releases: maoken-fonts/MaokenYingBiKaiShuJ on GitHub.

Where it works best

Handwritten letters and cards, blackboard and journal layouts, kids' workbooks, packaging copy, illustration captions, captions for short videos. Simplified-first - avoid traditional or rare glyphs; pair with warm paper backgrounds for extra handwriting charm.

Licence and commercial boundaries

Licence:SIL Open Font License 1.1

The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.

SIL OFL 1.1. Free for every common commercial use (ads, packaging, film, marks, embedded apps, web). Modifications and redistribution must stay under OFL, include the licence text and use a new name (reserved names dropped).

Hard restrictions

  • Derivatives must stay OFL and drop reserved names.
  • No standalone sale of the font files.
  • Simplified-only - no traditional or rare glyphs.
