Ubuntu - warm & humanist

The specimen uses the official Google Fonts subset when available, otherwise a font installed on this device. If neither exists the browser falls back to a system font, so treat the official download page as authoritative.

About this font

Ubuntu is Canonical's Latin sans for its operating system and brand, drawn by Dalton Maag and released open with Ubuntu 10.10 in 2010. It breaks with pure Swiss geometry: slanted cuts, rounded bowls and lifted horizontals give it a hand-made warmth and a glanceable identity. Five weights with italics, balanced across print, screen and touch rendering, it is one of the most recognisable faces in the Linux ecosystem. Under Canonical's own Ubuntu Font Licence 1.0 (an OFL-inspired free licence), individuals and businesses may use, modify and redistribute it freely and bundle it with software, so long as the font files are not sold standalone.

Where it works best

For OS and software branding, developer tools and terminals, tech and open-source landing pages, docs and help centers, marketing email and conference templates. Headlines at 700 with the slanted cuts, body at 400; pairs cleanly with Source Han Sans or Sarasa Gothic for mixed Chinese copy; most at home alongside Ubuntu products.

Licence and commercial boundaries

Licence:Ubuntu Font Licence 1.0

Canonical's own free licence for the Ubuntu type family (Ubuntu Font Licence 1.0), modelled on SIL OFL: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution, and bundling with software, for individuals and businesses. As with OFL, the files themselves may not be sold standalone and derivatives should not take the Ubuntu name. A distinct licence text from OFL - check each before mixing in a combined release.

UFL 1.0 (Canonical): free commercial use, modification, embedding and bundling with software; the files may not be sold standalone and derivatives should dodge the Ubuntu name. Terms at ubuntu.com/legal/font-licence; a distinct licence from OFL - check each when mixing.

Hard restrictions

  • Licence is UFL, not OFL - mind mixing.
  • Derivatives should not take the Ubuntu name.
  • No standalone sale.
