Crimson Pro
A literary modern transitional serif
Type specimen
The specimen uses the official Google Fonts subset when available, otherwise a font installed on this device. If neither exists the browser falls back to a system font, so treat the official download page as authoritative.
About this font
Crimson Pro is Jacques Le Bailly's modern rework of the classic Crimson Text skeleton, retuned for digital reading. It keeps the elegant literary mood of the original - balanced contrast, refined serifs, comfortable counters - while upgrading Latin and numeral quality, fleshing out the weight ladder and adding a variable font spanning nine weights from light to black. Long English editorial, magazines, books and reference layouts get an old-publishing feel without dating; bold headings stand their ground. Alongside Libre Caslon and Source Serif it's among the dependable open English serifs - a natural pick when a project wants literary warmth. SIL OFL 1.1: free use, embedding, modification and redistribution.
Where it works best
Ideal for English long-form body, magazines and book layouts, academic and publishing typography, and branded serif accents such as pull quotes and headlines. Use 400/450 for body and 700/900 for headings; pair Source Han Serif on the Chinese side for a coherent serif voice.

Licence and commercial boundaries
Licence:SIL Open Font License 1.1
The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.
SIL OFL 1.1. Free for all commercial use; embeddable, webfont-safe, modifiable and redistributable. Derivatives stay OFL without the reserved Crimson names, carry the licence text, and are never sold standalone.
Hard restrictions
- Derivatives stay OFL and drop the Crimson reserved names.
- No standalone sale.
- Latin only; pair a Chinese font.
Commercial-use FAQ
How are Crimson Pro and Crimson Text related?
Pro is the modernised upgrade of Text: same classic skeleton with a fuller weight ladder, refined glyphs and a variable font, aimed at modern web and publishing workflows. Text is no longer the recommended build - use Pro.
