EB Garamond - the book serif

The specimen uses the official Google Fonts subset when available, otherwise a font installed on this device. If neither exists the browser falls back to a system font, so treat the official download page as authoritative.

About this font

A community revival from Garamont's 16th-century specimens, started by Georg Duffner and carried forward in the open - the most complete old-style serif in free type: reserved x-height, gentle strokes, italics after Granjon. Set classics, history and scholarship with it and the bookish air is unbeatable; ten weights, variable, full Latin. The Google Fonts build adds optical sizes and ligatures. In print it delivers commercial-grade text face character at zero cost; on screens, give it generous leading.

EB Garamond is community archaeology - the repo argues each digitisation choice against Garamont specimens. Its default figures are oldstyle (bouncing); switch to lining figures in OpenType features for tabular data, or dates and prices will jitter.

Where it works best

Books and e-books, cultural brands, museum collateral, invitations. Picks: 11-12 pt text, italics for voice; pairs with a light sans headline (Montserrat Light) for a classic-modern duet.

Licence and commercial boundaries

Licence:SIL Open Font License 1.1

The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.

OFL 1.1 for current builds (earlier releases carried GPL+font-exception); full free commercial use.

Hard restrictions

  • Rename derivatives.
  • No standalone sales.

Before commercial use, verify the licence on the official page and keep a dated screenshot as evidence. For trademarks, overseas publication and large-scale embedding, consult an IP professional.
