About this font

Huiwen GangHei is the bold gothic member of TerryWang's Huiwen family, and the wild opposite of Mincho: where Mincho is a memory of old newspapers, GangHei revives the heavy, street-level black-letter presence of 1960s-80s Hong Kong signage. Derived from the evolution of Japanese Ming faces toward heavyweight gothics, its strokes are square and full, corners cut crisply, contrast pronounced - a face built to dominate a shopfront from a block away. Rebuilt glyph by glyph from period lead type, it keeps thick ink and weathered edges across 20k+ simplified and traditional glyphs (GBK build aligned to mainland norms). Far rawer and more human than modern corporate sans, it suits retro-HK posters, neon signage, film titles, dai pai dong branding and any scene that needs an instant 80s Hong Kong opening-credit mood; it is not a body text face. Same near-CC0 author-declared terms as the rest of the family: free commercial use, no credit, embed and redistribute freely, never sell the font files.

Where it works best

Retro-HK posters, cyberpunk Hong Kong themes, film titles, neon signage, da pai dong branding, street-style motion graphics. Use at medium-plus display sizes; patch missing glyphs within the family; reach for the GBK build in mainland-standard contexts.

Licence and commercial boundaries

Licence:CC0 / public-domain-style

The author waives nearly all rights - maximum freedom; used by personal projects like Huiwen, usually keeping one baseline: the font files may not themselves be sold. Without standard legal text, the release page is the source - screenshot it.

Author-declared terms: free commercial use everywhere, embedding and redistribution allowed, no credit; selling the font files is forbidden. Governed by the Zhihu article and embedded metadata - an 'author statement' licence; screenshot the page for major filings.

Hard restrictions

  • Never sell the font files.
  • Patch missing glyphs within the Huiwen family.
  • A display face - poor fit for long body copy.
