LXGW ZhenKai

LXGW ZhenKai is lxgw's second Kai (regular script) face after the celebrated LXGW WenKai, released in 2024. Where WenKai is warm and even, ZhenKai leans into a livelier hand-written Kai: exposed entry strokes, open sweeps, loose joins - it reads like an actual brush-written page. It covers GB2312 simplified Chinese plus common traditional characters, works at small print and shines as display type with more personality and literary air than a plain hei. Actively maintained with responsive issues. Licensed under SIL OFL 1.1, free for personal and commercial use, embeddable and derivable (derivatives must keep OFL and drop the reserved LXGW/WenKai names). Download from the official GitHub Releases.

Best for poetry typesetting, brand copy headlines, cultural packaging, greeting cards, children's book covers, documentary subtitles - anywhere a handwritten warmth helps. Use at large sizes with loose tracking; for small body copy WenKai is steadier, ZhenKai livelier. Pairs nicely with text serif pairs and handwritten Latin; avoid cold geometric sans beside it. Single weight: build hierarchy with size, tracking and color instead of a fake bold.

The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.

SIL OFL 1.1. Free for every commercial context, embeddable and modifiable. Obligations: derivatives drop the reserved names 'Xiawu/LXGW', carry the OFL text, never sell the font alone.
