About this font

PT Serif is an open-source text serif by Russian foundry ParaType, developed for the Public Types of Russian Federation initiative and released in 2010 alongside PT Sans. Designed in one system with its Cyrillic, it excels across Slavic scripts, drawing on 18th-19th century Russian transitional serifs with restrained contrast and sober, sturdy slabs. Four styles (regular/bold + italics); crisp at small sizes, suited to newspapers, papers and manuals, and a top pick for Eastern-European sites. Latin quality is high, pairing naturally with Chinese song/Ming faces for bilingual documents.

Where it works best

For Slavic-language sites and documents, newspapers, papers, manuals, official files; the Latin pairs with Chinese Ming/song serifs in bilingual publishing. Body 400, emphatic 700, open leading.

The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.

SIL OFL 1.1. Free commercial use everywhere, embeddable; derivatives drop the name.

Hard restrictions

  • Derivatives drop the name
  • No standalone sales
