Smiley Sans Oblique
Smiley Sans
Type specimen
The specimen uses the official Google Fonts subset when available, otherwise a font installed on this device. If neither exists the browser falls back to a system font, so treat the official download page as authoritative.
About this font
The oblique Chinese display grotesque open-sourced in 2022 by bilibili's oooooohmygosh, which set design feeds on fire the day it shipped. Hanzi lean 6 degrees, Latin 8; narrow bodies, high gravity, big hooks - the smile-like卧钩 borrowed from 1980s hand-lettering, so the type forever looks three-tenths amused while still packing punch. Full GB2312 with extensions plus Latin, Cyrillic, Greek and kana arrive in static and variable files; subtitles, match reports and feature spreads - any layout needing momentum - are its domain. Under OFL (rename obligations apply), it is the most commercially-used open display face of recent years.
Version facts: the repo ships static OTF/TTF plus variable, with separate SC/TC mappings, and atelierAnchor announces changes on its own site. In practice add ~2-3 % baseline compensation beside Source Han - its 6° lean and narrow face shift the visual centre of gravity; proof one frame before batch-subtitling.
Where it works best
Short-video titles and lower-thirds, sports and esports kit, festival posters, magazine display, promo banners. Rules: it is already oblique - never skew again; mind optical baselines when mixing with upright grotesques; long small-size text is off-limits, every pixel serves speed.

Licence and commercial boundaries
Licence:SIL Open Font License 1.1
The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.
SIL OFL 1.1: free commercial use, embedding, modification and redistribution; derivatives keep OFL and shed reserved names, the LICENSE travels with files, standalone sales are barred. The author releases it hoping for 'a small positive impact on the world' - credit not required, welcomed by the community.
Hard restrictions
- Modified builds shed reserved names.
- No standalone sales.
