Space Grotesk
Derived from Space Mono
Type specimen
The specimen uses the official Google Fonts subset when available, otherwise a font installed on this device. If neither exists the browser falls back to a system font, so treat the official download page as authoritative.
About this font
A proportional font liberated from the monospaced Space Mono, keeping its space-age quirks: chamfered D, split t, square-tailed y, sheared base on numeral 1 - nostalgia and futurism in oscillation. Variable, seven weights; Medium-to-Bold display is its apex, and AI, dev-tool and sci-fi brands choose it to shout 'technical, not cold'. Its oddities disturb small text, so reserve it for headlines and data; Inter body plus Space Grotesk heads is the developer-aesthetic default stack.
Version history matters: Karsten's original build, the Google cut and the 2023 repo revision differ in figures and cap weights - regression-test before updating long-lived layouts. There is no true italic (weight axis only); fake slant or pair, a trap teams discover late.
Performance: the variable woff2 is a fraction of three statics - ship it once. For data display, Colophon's Space Mono keeps family feel. Trademark use carries no clauses beyond OFL; counterfeit look-alikes circulate on bundle sites, so trust only Google Fonts and the official repo.
Where it works best
Tech key visuals, product headlines, console and dashboards, event KV. Picks: 500/700 heads; figures at 500+; never body.

Licence and commercial boundaries
Licence:SIL Open Font License 1.1
The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.
Standard OFL 1.1; mono and proportional builds share the repository.
Hard restrictions
- Rename derivatives.
- No standalone sales.
