About this font

Space Mono is a monospace by London studio Colophon Foundry, commissioned by Google and released in 2016, balancing functional monospacing with display personality. Its 1960s-70s space-age and early-terminal aesthetic - sturdy stems, quirk serifs, distinctive O/S, playful ligatures - gives code and short captions a retro-futuristic air without hurting usability: open counters, aligned figures. Four styles. Perfect for developer blogs, terminal vibes, tech-event posters and retro graphics, pairing well as code and Latin accents beside Chinese hei body text.

Where it works best

For code and terminal display, dev-blog headers, tech-event posters, dashboard labels, retro key visuals and aligned figures/keys. Body 400 with italic for depth; use 20px+ to bring out its retro character.

Licence and commercial boundaries

Licence:SIL Open Font License 1.1

The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.

SIL OFL 1.1. Free commercial use everywhere, embeddable; derivatives drop the name.

Hard restrictions

  • Derivatives drop the name
  • No standalone sales
