About this font
Spectral is an open-source text serif by Paris studio Production Type, commissioned by Google for Documents and long-form reading. It pairs a classical newspaper skeleton with a crisp, airy finish - sharp serifs, measured transitions, open counters that keep long copy flowing - yet stays modern enough to avoid period stiffness. Seven weights plus italics and small caps, tuned for screens. Great for blogs, long reads, news products and theses; at 600/700 it also carries a magazine tone, and it sits neatly alongside Chinese Ming-style partners such as Source Han Serif.
Where it works best
For long-read blogs, digital magazines, news sites, theses, ebooks and newspaper-style covers. Body at 400 with generous leading, headlines 500/600, italics for notes. Pairs with Chinese Ming/song serifs for bilingual editorial; a trustworthy whole-site serif for English.

The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.
