About this font

WenJin Mincho is takushun-wu's wide-coverage serif built on Source Han Serif for Simplified Chinese: reconstructed file layout, cleaned metadata and multi-weight TTC packs solve real problems for variant glyphs, rare characters and classical-text setting. The repo's Chinese docs, FAQ and changelog detail coverage and simplified-character rule differences, making it a practical pick for local gazetteers, academic papers and unusual place names. It keeps the classic Ming skeleton and contrast, reading beautifully in print and on screen. Licensed under SIL OFL 1.1 - free for commercial use, embedding and modification, with derivatives staying OFL under new names - WenJin is a dependable open body serif that goes far beyond the usual GB2312 sets.

Where it works best

Ideal for simplified-Chinese body text, classical-text and academic typesetting, and projects demanding variant glyphs. Use Regular/Medium for body and Bold-plus for headings; subset by weight if you want it on the web.

Licence and commercial boundaries

Licence:SIL Open Font License 1.1

The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.

SIL OFL 1.1. Free for all common commercial use, embeddable, modifiable, redistributable. Derivatives stay OFL under a new name; files are not sold standalone.

Hard restrictions

  • Derivatives must stay OFL and use a new name.
  • No standalone sale of the font files.
  • Large coverage - subset per weight for the web.
