Work Sans
The office sans
Type specimen
The specimen uses the official Google Fonts subset when available, otherwise a font installed on this device. If neither exists the browser falls back to a system font, so treat the official download page as authoritative.
About this font
Wei Huang's commissioned face for Screenhero, later open-sourced: low contrast, tall x-height, crisp terminals, sitting between grotesque calm and geometric order - quiet efficiency in UI copy. Nine weights plus variable, excellent Latin colour, and even Light at display sizes breathes elegantly. Against ubiquitous Inter/Roboto it keeps more brand identity in startup circles - the level-headed switch when you are tired of clashing fonts.
Work Sans hides a bonus: its Thin/Light cuts carry a rare airy elegance that some brands use as a stand-in for premium display grotesques. Digits are proportional by default - switch on tabular figures for reports and code alignment.
Pedigree matters: the repo keeps static and variable builds, the original Screenhero specimens, and publishes the kerning table as CSV in docs/ for design-system alignment. Rounder than Roboto - a good tell for 'light tech' tone. Teams often pair it with IBM Plex Mono in consoles; matching x-heights keep terminals on the baseline.
Where it works best
Product sites and docs, branded back-office UI, marketing headlines. Picks: 400 text, 500 UI, 600-700 heads; airy Light for oversize display.

Licence and commercial boundaries
Licence:SIL Open Font License 1.1
The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.
Standard SIL OFL 1.1 duties.
Hard restrictions
- Rename derivatives.
- No standalone sales.
