WenQuanYi Micro Hei
WenQuanYi Micro Hei
Type specimen
The specimen uses the official Google Fonts subset when available, otherwise a font installed on this device. If neither exists the browser falls back to a system font, so treat the official download page as authoritative.
About this font
A veteran of the Linux desktop. Built by WenQuanYi from Droid Sans Fallback under OFL, carrying nearly 28,000 CJK characters, it shipped into countless distros, servers and embedded boxes as one of the earliest genuinely usable open Chinese fonts. Its Droid-humanist frame - medium bodies, centred gravity, open mouths, softly rounded terminals - earned a reputation for pixel-steady rendering on low-res LCDs. No longer a designer's first pick, it remains the fallback of routers, industrial panels and any 'must show Chinese on a Linux box' scenario, and a useful bold companion where Source Han sits.
Where it works best
Embedded UI, Raspberry Pi projects, legacy LCD terminals, and small-footprint web fallbacks. Picks: Regular body, Bold emphasis; prefer Source Han on modern displays and keep Micro Hei as the Linux leg of your font stack.

Licence and commercial boundaries
Licence:Apache License 2.0
A software-style open licence, more permissive than OFL: commercial use, modification and closed-source embedding with redistribution, requiring only that copyright and licence notices are kept, with an explicit patent grant. Roboto ships under it.
WQY Micro Hei is dual-licensed under the Apache License 2.0 and the GNU GPL v3 (with a font-embedding exception): free commercial use, embedding, modification and redistribution. For most commercial work Apache 2.0 is the more permissive choice, requiring only that the notices be preserved; GPL v3 fits redistribution within GPL projects. The sibling WQY Zenhei carries GPL v3 + font exception with different terms, so distinguish them. Source: the project's official licensing statement.
Hard restrictions
- Keep Apache notices and copyright when distributing or embedding.
- GPL v3 distribution follows its terms (with the font-embedding exception).
