Zen Kaku Gothic New
A modern Japanese grotesque
Type specimen
The specimen uses the official Google Fonts subset when available, otherwise a font installed on this device. If neither exists the browser falls back to a system font, so treat the official download page as authoritative.
About this font
Zen Kaku Gothic New is a modern Japanese grotesque from the Zen Fonts project, designed by Yoshimichi Ohira to marry the classic bones of Japanese gothic with a contemporary screen aesthetic. Clear kana and kanji, more open counters, and a lighter, quieter mood than older Japanese faces - it stays legible in small type on both phones and the web. Google Fonts serves multiple weights plus a variable font. A fresher pick among open Japanese sans, great for product UI, blog body, fashion brands and event key visuals; beside Chinese sans it blends comfortably. Licensed under SIL OFL 1.1 - free use, embedding and modification.
Where it works best
Ideal for Japanese product UI, blog and news body, fashion and lifestyle brands, and event headlines. Use 400/500 for body, 700/900 for headings, and the variable axis for scroll/hover weight effects. In Chinese-first layouts, keep a Chinese sans as the workhorse and reserve this for Japanese-facing accents.

Licence and commercial boundaries
Licence:SIL Open Font License 1.1
The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.
SIL OFL 1.1. Free for all commercial use, embeddable and webfont-safe, modifiable and redistributable. Derivatives stay OFL without the reserved Zen names, carry the licence text, and are never sold standalone.
Hard restrictions
- Derivatives stay OFL and drop the Zen reserved names.
- No standalone sale.
- Primarily Japanese; Chinese Han coverage is limited.
Commercial-use FAQ
Zen Kaku Gothic New or Noto Sans JP?
Noto Sans JP is more comprehensive and utilitarian; Zen Kaku Gothic New is sleeker and more styled for display. Serious long-form: Noto. More personality: Zen. Both are OFL and safe.
