About this font

GenYoMin is But Ko's (ButTaiwan) open-source revival of Adobe Source Han Serif tuned for Traditional Chinese reading: the same rigorous strokes, re-balanced for Taiwanese habits - steadier display sizes, more airy body text. Seven weights from ExtraLight to Heavy cover body to poster, with fine traditional punctuation and title cuts; the sibling GenYoGothic matches it for mixed setting. Licensed under SIL OFL 1.1: free for commercial use, modification and redistribution by anyone. Simplified-Chinese users may still use it, though forms follow Taiwan standards - use a simplified-savvy face for strict mainland orthography.

Where it works best

For Traditional-Chinese publishing, literary books and magazines, academic papers, brand marks and literary visuals. Body at Regular/Medium, headings Bold or Heavy; pair with GenYoGothic or Source Han Sans for hierarchy. Vertical typesetting works well. If you need strict Simplified-Chinese standard forms, choose Source Han Serif or a simplified-first Ming instead.

Licence and commercial boundaries

Licence:SIL Open Font License 1.1

The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.

SIL OFL 1.1: free commercial use, modifiable, embeddable and freely distributable; derivatives must stay under OFL with reserved-name rules and the files may not be sold standalone. See the official ButTaiwan/genyo-font repository for the terms.

Hard restrictions

  • Traditional-first; pick a simplified face for mainland norm forms.
  • Derivatives must carry OFL 1.1.
  • No standalone sale.

Commercial-use FAQ

How does it differ from Source Han Serif?

It is a tuned derivative - tighter structure, Traditional-reading-friendly weights and punctuation - while keeping the same SIL OFL 1.1 terms.
