Playfair Display
The open high-contrast serif
Type specimen
The specimen uses the official Google Fonts subset when available, otherwise a font installed on this device. If neither exists the browser falls back to a system font, so treat the official download page as authoritative.
About this font
A display serif honouring Enlightenment-era transitional faces (Playfair being the Scottish punch-cutter): soaring stroke contrast, hairline serifs, florid italics - at large sizes it gets closer to Didot/Bodoni luxury than any open font. Nine weight pairs plus variable, Cyrillic included. It exists for moments above 24 px: fashion editorial, wedding suites, brand manifestos, report covers. Using it for body text is self-harm - hairlines vanish on screens and presses alike.
Its italics - hairlines plus florid caps - are the underrated half: a quote layout assembles itself. Performance: high contrast smudges on low-DPI screens, so bump to SemiBold on mobile; switch on liga/dlig to unlock historical ligatures.
Version facts: nine weight pairs (100-900) plus variable; SC caps and italics are separately drawn. It is one of the few lawful free stand-ins for parts of the Bodoni/Didot territory, though proportions differ - when dressing luxury layouts, verify the real licence rather than assuming equivalence.
Where it works best
Luxury and lifestyle brands, magazine heads, weddings and events; the serif-headline/sans-body classic pairs it with Inter or Lato. For CJK, set it against LXGW WenKai or Source Han Serif Heavy.

Licence and commercial boundaries
Licence:SIL Open Font License 1.1
The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.
Standard OFL 1.1 duties.
Hard restrictions
- Rename derivatives.
- No standalone sales.
