Young Serif - vintage warmth

The specimen uses the official Google Fonts subset when available, otherwise a font installed on this device. If neither exists the browser falls back to a system font, so treat the official download page as authoritative.

About this font

Young Serif is Parisian studio Noir Blanc Rouge's 2023 retro display serif by Bastien Sozeau, inspired by Plantin Infant and ITC Italian Old Style and built for big type. Its face is unmistakeable: serifs shaped like rounded transistor pins, old-style bowls on p/q and a/e with a hand-aged signage warmth - vintage yet never dusty. On Google Fonts as a single Regular cut with moderate proportions and gentle contrast, it carries superb display character at mid-to-large sizes. SIL OFL 1.1 - free commercial use, embedding and redistribution, no standalone sale, derivatives stay under OFL.

Where it works best

For magazine and newspaper mastheads, brand and magazine nameplates, coffee and bakery brands, book covers, retro posters, indie publishing, signage and menu titles. Set large with room to breathe; pair a neutral sans for body; single weight - reach for a bolder serif when headings need heft.

Licence and commercial boundaries

Licence:SIL Open Font License 1.1

The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.

SIL OFL 1.1: free commercial use, embeddable, modifiable under OFL with reserved-name rules; no standalone sale. Upstream at noirblancrouge/YoungSerif.

Hard restrictions

  • Single display weight.
  • Latin-first; pair a Chinese face.
  • No standalone sale.
