The specimen uses the official Google Fonts subset when available, otherwise a font installed on this device. If neither exists the browser falls back to a system font, so treat the official download page as authoritative.

About this font

FONTWORKS' open hybrid of brush and Mincho: a serif with handwriting soul, prettier in the Decolleté cut, quieter in Seeded - in Japanese it reads like a neatly typed letter with gentle nibs. It is the upstream skeleton of LXGW WenKai, feeding two Chinese projects. Four weights on Google Fonts, right for Japanese copy and literary stationery brands; JIS-level CJK coverage only - mainland text returns to LXGW or Source Han Serif.

Context matters: FONTWORKS opened Klee One under OFL while most of its library stays commercial - don't extrapolate. SemiBold is the community favourite (its brush decorations peak there); coverage is JIS levels 1-2, and some shapes follow Japanese norms - not for formal Simplified Chinese.

Web footgun: Klee One ships Light and SemiBold as statics - no 400/700 request or browsers synthesize weight and nibs distort; test what 600 resolves to. For a Chinese counterpart with the same sentiment, LXGW WenKai shares both the look logic and the OFL licence and swaps cleanly.

Where it works best

Japanese posters and packaging, brand micropoetry, gift stationery. Picks: Light for airy display, SemiBold for accents; avoid whole CJK-simplified paragraphs.

Licence and commercial boundaries

Licence:SIL Open Font License 1.1

The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.

Standard OFL 1.1 duties.

Hard restrictions

  • Rename derivatives.
  • No standalone sales.
