LXGW Neo XiHei
LXGW Neo XiHei / SimXiHei, IPAex Gothic rebuilt to mainland PRC forms
Type specimen
The specimen uses the official Google Fonts subset when available, otherwise a font installed on this device. If neither exists the browser falls back to a system font, so treat the official download page as authoritative.
About this font
LXGW Neo XiHei is a 2023 gothic by independent type designer lxgw, rebuilt on IPAex Gothic: Japanese component forms retouched glyph-by-glyph to mainland PRC standard shapes, Greek and Cyrillic redrawn, Vietnamese added - about 22,000 CJK characters with the full GB 2312 set and all 8,105 general-use simplified Han. It keeps IPAex's upright bones with cleaner, simplified strokes, more modern and inviting than legacy youhei-style faces. Variants cover print (Plus), screens (Screen), GB 18030 (Fusion) and code (Code). Licensed under the IPA Font License 1.0 - free for personal and commercial use without charge, notice or attribution.
Where it works best
Great for web and app body text, UI copy, manuals and data-heavy layouts, and screen-first documents. Use the regular weight for body, heavier weights or companions like Source Han Sans and Glow Sans for display; pairs well with Inter or Roboto Latin. Note the IPA licence is not compatible with SIL OFL - verify compliance before cross-licence redistribution.

Licence and commercial boundaries
Licence:IPA Font Licence
Japan's IPA Font Licence, OFL-like: free commercial use and embedding; modified versions stay under the licence and must be named apart from reserved names. Used by several Japanese libraries.
Released under the IPA Font License 1.0: free for any commercial or non-commercial use without payment, notice or attribution; freely distributable and embeddable; derivatives must carry the same licence and drop the word 'IPA' from font/program/file names. The official README stresses this licence is incompatible with SIL OFL 1.1 - check the upstream terms before merging.
Hard restrictions
- Derivatives must drop 'IPA' from names.
- No standalone sale of the font file.
- Not compatible with SIL OFL - mind mixed licensing.
Commercial-use FAQ
Same author as LXGW WenKai?
Yes, both by lxgw - but WenKai is SIL OFL while Neo XiHei is IPA-licensed; the licences are not interchangeable for redistribution.
