Montserrat
Buenos Aires street signage
Type specimen
The specimen uses the official Google Fonts subset when available, otherwise a font installed on this device. If neither exists the browser falls back to a system font, so treat the official download page as authoritative.
About this font
Salvaged from the old signage of Buenos Aires' Montserrat barrio: Ulanovsky rebuilt heritage letterforms into this geometric sans - nine weight pairs plus variable, wide round letters, nearly perfect circles, commanding caps. Light makes airy luxury posters, Black makes event key visuals; it is the value king of open-source display. From Google's Glide to countless identities, its silhouette is everywhere. Slightly heavy for small text; headline and display are its home.
Montserrat's flared r, t and y quote early-20th-century barrio signage - its signature against Futura-likes. In systems, the 500-600 zone is its sweet spot; Light display plus wide faces want body measure under 65 characters.
Two craft notes: the double-storey g separates it from single-storey geometrics - don't mix families on brand surfaces; its default fi/fl ligatures need a kerning fallback check when disabled. Condensed, Alternates and Swashes siblings share the same OFL grant, so poster flourishes never need fresh legal review.
Where it works best
Brand headlines, event posters, launch pages, course covers, wayfinding caps. Picks: 600 and up for display; if body is needed, drop a size and open leading.

Licence and commercial boundaries
Licence:SIL Open Font License 1.1
The dominant permissive licence for open fonts: free commercial use, modification, embedding and redistribution. Its core duties are that derivatives stay under OFL without the Reserved Font Name, the licence text travels with the files, and the fonts themselves are never sold standalone. Works typeset with them belong wholly to you.
Standard OFL 1.1 duties.
Hard restrictions
- Rename derivatives.
- No standalone sales.
